In a post a few days ago I mentioned how I was making a wool blanket for Kaleena for Christmas, and here it is all finished, except for a few loose strings that still need to be cut:)
I really love how it came out, I must say though it was more work than I had initially thought, and the fact that this is only my third or fourth real attempt with a sewing machine certainly shows...
Still with all the little imperfections I do adore the feel of it, the colors, the heart detail as well as the binding. I feel certain that Kaleena will love it.
Kaleena was needing a good woolen hat that she will actually wear, so the other day as I was cutting the sleeves from one of my woolen sweater finds, I thought it might make a good hat, I rolled up the edges and it just looked so darn cute on her, and she loved it as well...yeah...
She wore it like that for a couple of days and today I put the finishing touches on it.
The folds kept unrolling as she was wearing it, so I sewed it around with the sewing machine (now I just cannot get enough of using it). She also wanted me to somehow finish the part that hung loose at the top. I tied a dark piece of yarn around it, cut it into thin strips and braided the strips with pieces of yearn in between. I really love how it turned out and will definitely make more of these easy and cute looking hats.
Sunday morning as we went out early to find the pine branches for our wreath, it was quite cold, a perfect morning for mittens, as I searched through our winter things all boxed up, I realized that I had none for Keenan, and promised him that I would make him some when we got home that day.
I had seen this tutorial here, and had been wanting to make some. I really love the multi colored look, so cute. Kaleena wanted some as well, and she wanted them to match her hat, so fortunately I had enough left of the same sweater to make her a pair as well.
I am so absolutely amazed at the unlimited possibilities of felted woolen sweaters..
These are the initial pieces I made
and this is what it looked like sewed up before turning right side out
Keenan loves his new mittens, but did not want me to include him in the photo:)
And yet another really quick felted sweater creation.
Mama Rae from Morning Sun Rae shared with me this patten the other day, and as I was looking for a place to keep and wrap a present for Kaleena from my parents, I decided that this bag would be the perfect place to keep the hand puppets they got for her. This project is super easy, three cuts and one sewing at the bottom. I did also add some stitches around the edges, for a little detail.
A sweet and simple place for her puppets to live.
Love love love felted wool sweater projects:)
~Happy creating~

ReplyDeletemy friend, you are so incredibly creative it continually inspires me. your blanket is gorgeous!! no, i still haven't stitched mine. ;) love the mittens, too. add it to the list!
ReplyDeleteI so want to make one!Yours is just perfect.
ReplyDeleteYour blog rocks!
Nicole
Wow! So much creativity! I love it all! The hat looks so great on her! And the mittens seem to fit so well. It's always my problem when I sew mitts, they never fit well. I will try this pattern next time. Did you have to make a lot of adjustments?
ReplyDeleteCatherine,
ReplyDeleteI pretty much eyeballed it. I made sure to make them a little bigger than I needed and yes I did have to adjust, but easier to make smaller than larger:). Make sure you cut and pin both before sewing, so as not to get confused and make two of the same hand:)
Enjoy, they are lovely!
warmly,

ReplyDeleteYou READ MY MIND!!! Today I was thinking that if I had to knit one more pair of mittens that would get lost instantly I would go crazy!!!! I was planning to look for a wool sweater/cheating way of getting some done quickly and on the cheap...and there you were...
ReplyDeleteThanks!
lovely blanket and Suh-Weet hat!

What great ways to re-use wool sweaters! I am inspired...
ReplyDeleteMy neighbor and I have a fabulous collective of wool sweaters and now we have some inspiration. Just in time, we were planning when to meet and craft. I may bug you with some more questions as I try some of these myself, esp the hat which my little guy definitely needs! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteyou have been very busy! and extremely creative....what beautiful items! inspires me to go to thrift stores for wool sweater finds :) love the mittens and the blanket :) the pix almost allow me to feel the items :) thanks for sharing your joy.

Very cute stuff! I'm getting the urge to start crafting again.
ReplyDeleteYou are so clever and wool is so wonderful. I really like the hat!
ReplyDeleteI was just about to give up on the felted sweater blanket I want to make for my daughter when I read your post this morning and was instantly re-invigorated! The part I am stuck on is how to join the pieces together. Did you join them in the usual way (i.e. right sides together, then opened up)? I'm worried that the seams would end up too bulky for my machine to handle that way (or that my blanket would end up too small). I would really like to join the pieces side by side, but I can't think of how to do this. How did you do it for your blanket??
ReplyDeletebtw, I really love the hat and mittens and will have to try that with some of my extra felted sweaters!
Wow, such great woolie treasures. Wonderful inspirations...I love love love the mittens!!!

Thank you so much for all the lovely comments.....
ReplyDeleteTandycat,
I laid the pieces on top of each other, then I sewed down one side and then turned it and sewed the loose piece down on the other side, this does make the blanket a little smaller, but not too much. I did not want to put a back on and therefor did not want a seem sticking out. The wool pulls in different directions and to make a nice and even finish I added the binding, which I think takes the eyes away from all the obvious sewing errors within the blanket.
Hope this helps..
warmly,
Christina
I love those mittens. I've been thinking I wanted to repurpose a couple sweaters for my littles to make winter mittens.
ReplyDeleteWow, you are not only skilled but prolific in your creativity! I have some sweaters all felted and ready to become...something. I'm undecided on what projects to dedicate them to. You have provided many great ideas. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteYour blanket is truly beautiful. Recycling old woolen items is so much fun. Old sweaters are also good for making felted bags. Love the hat idea!
ReplyDeletewowza! Nice work. I have tried (and failed) the mittens. This year I was going to make hats, now I want to make *your* hat. Its so cute!!! That blanket has looong been on my wish list. LOVE.
ReplyDeleteLove the blanket, mittens and esp the hat!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who makes the mittens she uses a thin sweater to make liners ...she just makes two more top parts to the gloves (no cuff) and sews them to the turned inside out mitt at the cuff
(does that make sense ?) it makes for a super warm pair
best wishes Val
Oh my gosh these are so clever! I love the bag at the end especially. What brilliant ideas!
ReplyDeletethose mittens are so cute- They are perfect for keeping little fingers warm fashionably!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you- came to you via The Friday Table
Well, dear one - look at all these fabulous comments! I have not worked with felted sweaters very much yet. But I've made many a quilt. My rule is this: if it holds together and keeps you warm, it's a success. But yours is also charming. I suppose, then, that my corollary must be this: if it is made with love, the blanket will do more than keep a little body warm.
ReplyDeleteI am intrigued by your energy and fascination - finding all of these wonderful ways to upcycle things that have outlived their first forms. Sewing on knits is not easy, though. The knits stretch, and the normal stitch of a machine doesn't allow for that. My suggestion is that you use a slight zig-zag stitch when you make things like hats and mittens, so that the stitches have room to accommodate the stretchiness of the fabric.
As usual, your photographs are beautiful and eloquent.
Oh, I forgot to mention the top of the hat - hotchacha! Wonderful. She looks a treat.
ReplyDeleteI love your wooly creations! Reusing wool sweaters is such fun.
ReplyDeleteWow. So many great ideas. I will definately be reading you more often.
ReplyDeleteLove thagt hat and gloves. Amazing stuff! xo m.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSo creative. Thank you for sharing the how-to.
Warm wishes,
Tonya
I really really love the hat...what an easy project I can make for my 7 or 4 year old as well. Also the blanket came out beautifully and imperfect stitching is what makes it such a special homemade item:-)
ReplyDeleteWhat fantastic ways to re-use old sweaters!! Love it and I'm definitely going to have to check out that mitten pattern. So cute :)
